Virgin Boss To Offer Affordable Space Travel - September 30, 2004

Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson has signed a £14m agreement which will see his company take passengers into space.

The British entrepreneur is having five "spaceliners" built by the US team behind the SpaceShipOne vehicle.

Sir Richard says the "Virgin Costa del Galactica’s” first flights should begin in about three years time and will depart from Luton airport.

“Our aim is to make space travel accessible to everyone and to keep the price down” he said. “Expensive meals will be replaced with a buffet trolley and flights will be cheaper if booked online". One of the Virgin Costa del Galactica’s five seats, however, will be first class.

Holiday and travel entertainment experts, Butlins, have been contracted by Virgin to provide in-flight entertainment during the 18 hour space flights. Having opted for a space theme, Butlins PR Manager, Kathy Berkowitz, said “I’m pleased to announce that onboard the Virgin Costa del Galactica will be the unflappable, ‘Pi-i-i-i-gs I-i-i-i-n Sp-a-a-a-a-a-ce!’, featuring Miss Piggy”.

Furry alien, Alf, will also be onboard the spaceship and was delighted with the opportunity. “I’ve been on a spiral of self-destruction since my show ended” said Alf. “I got into drugs, ate cat after cat and was horribly depressed. I’m looking forward to working with Miss Piggy, though. She’s a nice piece of pork”.

Not joining the entertainment staff will be Mork from Ork, whom met with serious injury when his “nano-nano” antics failed to impress Miss Piggy at a recent audition for the Costa del Galactica’s entertainment crew. A loud “H-i-i-i Y-a-a-a-a-h!” was heard before Mork was rushed to casualty with head injuries.

For a whole different space ride of comedy, join the astronomically funny, Perrier Award Nominee, Howard Read (“One of the finest comedy talents in the UK... a genius creation” METRO) at The Comedy Tree Putney this Thursday. Also onboard will be the weightless Dave Ward, Rob Collins, Paddy Lennox & MC E. McElroy.

On Friday at The Comedy Tree Hammersmith, the interstellar hilarity continues with the fantastic Paul Chowdry (“Absolutely hilarious... star in the making” THE STAGE), with the gravity-generating Greg Davies, light-speed joker Russell Kane, E. McElroy & MC Pete Jonas.
