Controversy over Christ film - March 11, 2004

This week, The Comedy Tree looked into the controversy surrounding Mel Gibson’s new film, The Passion of The Christ. Making its screen debut in London this week, its graphical depiction of the crucifixion of Christ has divided the religious community.

Jewish groups criticised the film saying it blames Jews for Jesus' death. Rabbi Rosenberg, chief rabbi of Congregation Beth El in New Jersey, said the film was anti-Semitic and that an inquiry into the death of Christ in 4 A.D. by Lord Huttonstein exonerated the Jews of all blame, placing it entirely on the Romans.

President Bush quickly weighed into the debate by saying, “I’m confused. Do you mean Jesus Martinez, that Mexican Trade Ambassador guy? Was he crucified?”

A woman in her 50s, Peggy Law, died during the crucifixion scene in a cinema in Wichita, Kansas. Not in anyway caused by the film, producer Bruce Davey described the timely death as “a PR godsend”. He added “we’re hoping for more”.

The Comedy Tree contacted The Saviour, Jesus Christ, to investigate rumours that film’s Executive Producer was actually Satan himself. Sounding glum, Christ plainly admitted that the Dark Lord simply beat him too it. “I wanted to direct it but I held out for Leonardo Di Caprio too long and Satan got the jump on me”.

Christ now plans to make a film based on his lost teen years not mentioned in the bible. “Basically, I wasn’t doing much” added Christ. “The film’s thematic influences will be such classics as Dude, Where’s My Car?, Revenge of the Nerds and the Porky’s series”.

This Thursday The Comedy Tree will re-enact highlights from the movie, featuring the skinny, yet lively Martin Davis as Jesus, the very holy Clare Campbell as Mary Magdalene, the blessed Ian Moffat as John the Baptist and E. McElroy as Judas with MC Pete Jonas as Yoda.

In other news the BBC has announced their search for a new director general to replace former director Dyke. Any lesbians interested in applying for the position should contact the BBC.
