Hurricane Frances Leaves No Trailer Park Unturned - September 9, 2004
Hurricane Frances completed its two-day clean-up of Florida, leaving storm-weary residents flooded and with frayed nerves. There were long queues for everyday items such as water, cigarettes and Billy Ray Cyrus tapes.
The path of Frances baffled meteorologists. It charged into Florida's east coast early Sunday, wiping out several of the town’s many trailer parks, but missing schools and retirement homes. It then turned left around a business park, travelled north-west for five miles, crossed a bridge and turned right where it destroyed half a dozen more trailer parks.
“It’s because it’s a French hurricane,” said 64-year-old Judy Duffy, of Fort Pierce who lost her entire Dolly Parton collection. “An American hurricane wouldn’t hurt nobody, except terrorists”.
On Monday, the hurricane made its way north along the Florida Panhandle into Georgia, ravaging dozens more trailer parks but completely avoiding areas with low unemployment and high rates of literacy.
Bobby Buckshot of Tampa, was devastated when Frances narrowly missed his home but then stopped, turned back and ripped his cherished residence to pieces. “A life’s memories erased,” muttered Bobby. “It was a double-wide trailer my wife Charlie and I cladded with vinyl weather boards in ’88. It looked like a real house if you were drunk enough”.
