Gay Marriage controversy - May 20, 2004
This week The Comedy Tree hosts a ‘Best of The Comedy Tree’ special for the London Comedy Festival. To celebrate, Pete Jonas and E. McElroy are getting married.
Following the Massachusetts legal decision to award same-sex couples the same rights as straight couples, Jonas and McElroy are pleased to announce their happy union. The couple will fly out tomorrow morning and return Thursday afternoon. They are acting swiftly after concern about George Bush’s repeated calls to Congress to amend the Constitution to prevent such marriages.
Often described as behaving like an old couple, it was only two months ago when Jonas was arrested on domestic violence charges for beating McElroy after the chairs at the club were arranged the wrong way. ‘He flew into a rage’ recalls McElroy. ‘It looked to be a good night, but the red chairs were mixed in with the blue chairs. He kept repeating “You’ve ruined The Comedy Tree! You’ve ruined The Comedy Tree!!” and beating me violently. It's my fault, really. I should have known better'.
Asked why they suddenly decided to take the plunge after all this time working together, they replied that not only did McElroy enjoy being beaten by Jonas but that his work permit expires in two months. Comparing themselves to another famous couple, McElroy added ‘although it didn’t work out for Ike and Tina, we really believe that we can make this sort of relationship work’.
A second wedding ceremony for the public will be held at 8.30 this Thursday at The Comedy Tree Putney. Featuring will be very stunning maid-of-honour Mickey D, best man Matthew Osborn, reverend Stefano Paolini, and the lucky groom Pete Jonas. Blushing bride-to-be E. McElroy will be MC. For this special London Comedy Festival show reservations are STRONGLY recommended. Prices are £7 on the door or £5 members and students. Book online now at www.thecomedytree.com.
