Bush Presidency Drives Comedy Boom - October 29, 2004
A new economic report released this week shows that London and the South East have been experiencing a comedy boom. Audience numbers at comedy clubs across the region are continuing to grow and are up a whopping 40% on average since George W Bush was (nearly) elected.
"Sure Bush has destabilised the world and incited hatred of the West amongst the majority of the planet" says comic Pete Jonas, "but I've added at least 15 minutes to my set. You can even get a laugh now just by doing his face”.
Indeed, Bush material has turned the careers of many fledgling comics around. “American bashing is easy and audiences love it” says American E. McElroy. “One night I just went on stage with a golf club and beat the shit out of myself. I stormed it and the audience wanted an encore, but I was too badly hurt”.
Michael Moore, a close friend and golf buddy of the President, has just bought a new yacht and a second house in Beverly Hills. His latest movie Fahrenheit 9/11 has netted over $118m, exceeding executive producer’s expectations by over $116 million. Moore was unavailable for comment due to large quantities of caviar and champagne in his mouth.
The Jongleurs chain of comedy clubs, which has added 11 new clubs to its fold during Bush’s presidency, has donated over £3 million to the Bush campaign. “It’s swings and roundabouts, innit?” said director James Allen. “Whilst there have been a lot of casualties in Iraq, more people are being entertained in the UK than ever before. Don’t miss our show at Battersea this week featuring Iranian comic Omid Djalili”.
