Boomerang 'not British invention' say Australians - May 13, 2004

A British children's writer is suggesting that the boomerang was invented in West Yorkshire rather than Australia. Terry Deary, author of some crap stories no one has ever heard of, got the idea when he spotted a very old looking bent stick from the window of a late running train he was stuck on.

Australian Aborigines are generally credited with inventing the boomerang but Deary claimed that the British ‘probably invented them too’.

Australian history expert, Professor John Manning, said he very much doubts the British claim. “Perhaps Deary is referring to a British version of the boomerang which would have cost a lot more and taken five times as long to do the same job far more poorly”.

Professor Manning told The Comedy Tree "The Aborigines feel very strongly about the boomerang. By making accusations like this, there is the risk of creating an international incident."

Indeed, the Australian League of Aborigines immediately enlisted the help of German engineers to launch a 300-foot boomerang at Deary from the city of Perth.

Mr Deary also sees his boomerang claim as something of an act of revenge. "Australians have sent us Rolf Harris" he said.

The Australians simply replied with “Phil Collins”.

Come to The Comedy Tree this Thursday and throw a bent stick at Deary for a Special Aussie & Kiwi show for the London Comedy Festival. The show features distinctly amusing Kitty Flannigan (Star of TV's Full Frontal) - "Funny and intelligent" Metro, with thinking man’s pervert Terry Frisby, very enjoyable Chris Brain, raucous sheila Pam Ford and Pete Jonas as MC. Book now as tickets are limited.

Deary went on to very proudly list several other British inventions, which include queuing, poor service, slappers with massive stomach rolls exposed and Americans.
