The Comedy Tree Sweeps Awards, Again - July 29, 2004

As The Comedy Tree prepares for its final shows this summer season, it has received yet another award nomination, closing the season as the world’s most awarded comedy club ever, ever.

The Putney comedy club was nominated for this year’s Perrier Award in Edinburgh, despite the Fringe Festival not having started, nor the club participating in this year’s Fringe Festival, nor the Perrier panel ever giving the award to a club before. Pete Jonas and E. McElroy of The Comedy Tree said they were pleased with the nomination, but would still not be going to Edinburgh. “We’re not sure where Scotland is”, they said, “but we've heard it's shit.”

The Perrier nomination is the club’s fiftieth award this year. Despite running for only two years, the club was presented with The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in May for its contributions to Country & Western Comedy. After receiving the MOBO Award for Best Black Comedy Club in February, McElroy and Jonas were awarded OBEs by the Queen in April. The two declined the OBE however as they were offended by the use of the word ‘order’.

The award-winning year has not been without controversy. The comedy duo’s acceptance ceremony for the synchronised swimming gold medal was marred by heckles from wheelchair-bound protesters, who claimed that the two should not have been eligible to enter the disabled Olympics.
